Hawaii is the tropical island set where people from Seattle go to see and feel the sun during the winter. It's the treatment of choice S.A.D.
19 imagesThis once fine resort was never restored after hurricane Iniki devastated the Garden Island coast. I found the ruin beautiful as I do most runis once the stink of decay has been removed by the pikake scented trade winds.
153 imagesMaui’s Incredible East Shore The once infamous forty-eight mile road from Paia to Hana was a four to five hour drive over unimproved road. Now days it take about two and a half hours. It’s amazing what some asphalt and highway “adjustments” will do because the twisting turning route is still pretty much the same, all six-hundred-twenty curves many in the blind and hair-pin category. The road winds through a series of gullies and gulches that may or may not have a brook that feeds a series of large and small pools and grottos. Or there may be a are either seasonal through mostly rainforest that are spanned by fifty nine old bridges to cross and forty-six of those are one-way. There are also a bunch of conduits. A big part of my excitement about planning this trip was photographing all the rushing waters that have formed the gullies and their pools and waterfalls over centuries. The first two thirds of the drive was getting pretty depressing because we were crossing dry gulches or merely wet gulches with a few puddles. Was there a drought? Then I started paying attention to the “topography” of those cuts through the landscape and all that was revealed without the rushing waters. Amazing mini grand canyons with large deep dry “pools”. Farther along we started encountering the year-round water attractions. So what a visual treat to get to see those landscapes in both states.
15 imagesThere are six-hundred-twenty curves and fifty nine bridges. The day I decide to photograph it's rainy with a chance of some blue sky. The road winds through a series of gullies and gulches that may or may not have a brook that feeds a series of large and small pools, waterfalls and grottos. Ruins of older parts of the highway are like artifacts grown over and consumed by the beautiful landscape.
